Our hammam towels are made from pure organic cotton. Generally, all our pestemals are robust and easy to care for. Before the first wash, it's a good idea to soak the towel in cold water for twelve hours; this makes it more absorbent. The cotton essentially learns to absorb water. Soaking also prevents the hammam towel from shrinking during subsequent washes and allows you to check the colorfastness. Pestemals are generally colorfast; however, since the cotton is dyed individually by each mill, we cannot guarantee colorfastness for all models. Soaking prevents any surprises, and after the second wash, the hammam towels should no longer bleed color.
Washing instructions for hammam towels:
In the long term, you can wash your new hammam towel at 40 degrees Celsius. Many of our customers prefer to wash it at 60 degrees Celsius, as they use hammam towels as sauna towels. This is possible, but in this case, you should expect the pestemal to shrink slightly by about one centimeter in both length and width. The same applies to tumble drying – here too, you can expect slight shrinkage of one to two centimeters. Hanging to dry is the gentlest and most energy-efficient method.

Each of our hammam towels undergoes a quality check before we ship it; however, handwoven hammam towels are never 100% perfect. This is inherent to the process and part of the charm of a handmade product. Should you pull a thread during use, you can try to rethread it by gently pulling on the towel. If necessary, simply cut the thread; the pestemal will not unravel.
The warp threads have come loose, what can I do?
The ends of the hammam towels are twisted and knotted by hand. After repeated use, some knots may come loose. With a little practice, you can easily twist and re-knot the ends.
