The stone pine (Pinus Cembra) belongs to the large botanical family of pine trees. Its main distribution is in the subalpine stage of the Central Alps. The distribution limit extends from 1,500 m in the Eastern Alps up to 2,680 m in the Western Alps. The stone pine tree is 200 to 400 years old on average. However, isolated finds and estimates assume that free-standing stone pine can reach the age of 1,000 years and more. The growth of the stone pine is strongly influenced by the weather. Old specimens are often ruffled by the wind and deformed by lightning and snow breaks. Their robustness and resilience are proverbial. Since time immemorial, the inhabitants of the Swiss stone pine regions have known about the positive qualities of this wonderful tree. That's why people have been using pine wood for centuries for bedding, wall coverings, furniture, and even entire stone pine rooms.
